Today I have begun my Etsy journey into making money through my craft. I have kept my shop limited to a few items that are primarily illustration. My favourite way to do illustrative portraits for friends and family is in a caricature/cartoon style using pen and ink and then reworking and cleaning up in photoshop. I see that I have a similar style to many popular Etsy shops online and hope that I can make some money doing some drawings. The average sale of a customised portrait is £30-40 so I hope by started slightly lower, I can entice new customers.

Etsy has also got a small section of online interior designers. I am keen to try this out, so I have researched what services other online shops offer. This ordinarily includes a dialog and image exchange with the client about the space and their personal tastes and what kind of support they are looking for. The designer then works towards a design within the clients budget. This could just be a lick of paint and some furnishing suggestions. Other projects I have seen advertised came with recommendations on minor remodeling and more invasive decoration that I would feel uncomfortable on advising from a distance.

If this is a successful way to generate money and practise designing spaces, I would been keen to move from an Etsy shop to a website and invest in a marketing plan to make it work. In the mean time, I am just going to try this out and see where it takes me.
