The Winchester School of Art took part in Tate exchange this weekend. A range of participatory activity were held across the Tate exchange floor and open to all. I visited the floor with two children I look after who love arts and crafts.
‘Moving In’- coordinated by Trinity Winchester and the Winchester School of Art, that surrounds the theme of cultural networks, global and local including the cultural Silk Road.
There was opportunity to collaborate in drawing and making of wearable costumes, typography and flights of fancy performance. Arriving later in the day with two children, we were invited to use printed letters that were part of the ‘Moving In’ event to make something from our imagination. One child opted for a sofa and used the letters to represent cushions. The other made a decorative jewellery box. We have been talking a lot about space and things in the home. The children are always asking me about the course and we have even brainstormed together on ideas of domestic behaviours and things they like to do in their home. A great idea that they have come to me with is building a fort. From here the logic behind the sofa is obvious, it is about comfort.
We spent a couple more hours at the Tate and took part in a T-shirt printing exchange where you leave yours behind and take one you like. Hopefully printed with a slogan, the idea being your thoughts are then shared in a new place by its owner. We were also invited to join a tea ceremony, documenting the tradition of Chinese Gongfu designs.
